Upgraded from my Panasonic ES8249 (previously reviewed: Panasonic ES8249K Arc IV Nano Vortex Wet/Dry Rechargeable Shaving System, Black), and it was worth the upgrade. I paid about half the retail at one of Amazon's partners, so I encourage shopping around; I'm not sure it's $200+ better than the 8249 if you pay full freight, but it's a definite improvement and certainly worth it if you can get it for substantially less than retail. Basically the same function as the 8249 - water-based cleaner, cleaning unit buttons function the same, same cleaning cartridges (a nice touch), wet-dry shave. The head is very large, but is easy to manipulate when you get used to it. Shaver seems to be slightly less noisy than the 8249 when in use; the cleaning unit is definitely noisier in the first few minutes of its cycle, but essentially the same when the blower comes on. It takes longer for the clean/dry cycle than the 8249 - haven't timed it but I would guess maybe 20% longer (well over an hour). The lock button on the back is a little more difficult to operate than other Panasonic shavers I have owned and is somewhat stiff, but looks fairly sturdy. One complaint about the Panasonics is that you can't use them as a corded shaver (maybe the result of fear of lawsuits for shaving in the shower with a cord attached!), but operationally to me this doesn't matter, and it charges within an hour. The batteries in this model last longer than the 8249 - guessing maybe 20% longer on a full charge. The bottom line - this shaver gives me the closest shave I have had from an electric shaver - very close to a blade, and the wet shave is definitely the most comfortable.

Postscript: Just returned from a recent detour into the Norelco world (rotary); I used Norelcos years ago, and like their quiet operation and battery life. Norelco also now has wet/dry shavers, and automatic cleaning stations. Worth a try again, HOWEVER, have gone back to Panasonic (wet shave) for two reasons: 1) Closer shave, and 2) Comfort. Which, I suppose, is the reason for shaving in the first place, if you choose not to grow facial hair. After a long history with many, many shavers, electric and otherwise, this Panasonic is the best of the lot for wet-shave electric shavers.

I was skeptical when I read the reviews, but i was tired of always having to shave with a Mach 3 Fusion Power razor all the time just to get a decent shave. If you are whatever like me and have sensitive skin and coarse, thick facial hair, then this razor is what you have been seeing for. The first time I shaved with the Arc Iv was after 2 days of not shaving, and I just wanted to see how it would cut. I didn't use shave cream or a preshave cause I just wanted to test it out. I was so astounded at how level my skin felt that I just kept shaving till my whole face and neck was shaved. And the intelligent thing about it was that my face didn't feel all raw, like I had some small cuts all over, in fact it felt just fine. It was the closest thing to a right razor shave that I have ever had with an electric razor. Granted, I don't shave dry often, most of the time I shave in the shower with shaving cream. My skin has beyond doubt cleared up since I have been using this because my face has been able to heal from the trauma of using a Mach 3 razor every day (even though a Mach 3 Fusion is awesome, after shaving 5 days right my skin gets traumatized). The fee lasts a very long time. Using it 5 times a week in the shower for 3+ minutes at a time I am able to get about a week and a half out of one charge. The base/charger also has a nice selection to clean the razor as well. This is very nice and suitable and makes the razor achieve like new and smell nice. I have heard complaints about how long it takes to clean and how noisy it is. Well, I don't beyond doubt think this a problem. In fact, it might just even be a wee nitpicky. Just don't fee it in your bedroom when you are trying to sleep and you will be fine. It does take a while to clean (perhaps about an hour), but I just set it and forget it while I am on my way out the door in the morning.

If you have been inspecting taking the plunge into the foray of the electric razor world, then look no further than this. The wet/dry selection is an undeniable advantage in both longevity and rugged survivability. Take it on a camping trip down the Colorado river and you won't worry about breaking it. It is nice looking, relatively small, gives a comfortable, close shave that will make your vital other want to make-out more and not worry about seeing like a sand-paper attack victim. I would very recommend this and it has changed my perception about the viability of electric razors in the contemporary age.

I've tried galvanic shavers that were half this price, and I've tried galvanic shavers that were more than double this price. I've gone with the top of the line Braun's, Philips Norelco's, and Remington's. I had to return all of them. For an galvanic shaver, this model was the best by far. It's easy to use and easy to clean (with the cleaning explication Or with soap and water). I love how it can be used dry (my usual method) or wet as well (in the shower if I'm in a hurry). I love how the charge lasts for days if I'm traveling. I love how it's fun to use. And most importantly, I love (and my girlfriend especially loves), how smooth my face feels after using it. I had used regular razors for years before deciding to give electrics a try. The decision was mostly based on the fact that I hated how time moving a task I found shaving to be. The only razors that I found got close sufficient to my skin, had costly cartridges that needed to be substituted way too often because of how fast my thick stubble dulled them. Eventually, I just kind of stopped shaving regularly. I didn't necessarily like holding a beard, but I disliked shaving even more, so I just stopped. After a while, when I noticed citizen started assuming I was about ten years older than I as a matter of fact am, I decided I best start shaving again. And so this time, I decided to try the galvanic route. After going straight through the gauntlet with pretty much every other high and low end galvanic shaver out there, I decided to try this Panasonic (a decision I made from reading these reviews on Amazon actually). That was a great decision. Immediately, I noticed the difference between this and all the other razors I tried. It seems that 13,000 Rpms does apparently make a difference. It gave me a cleaner, faster shave than any of the others. I don't know why exactly, maybe it was plainly because I feel that it as a matter of fact works, but I even have "fun" using it. As far as how well it works. On my face, it definitely gives the closest shaves I've ever had. It hands-down beats every galvanic shaver And regular razor that I've ever used. On the neck however, it does seem to continually miss some spots, and just can't quite adapt to the topography of my Adam's apple. It's not too bad, but on days that I have leading meetings/interviews, I do have to go over my neck with a regular razor just to make sure all is perfect. These instances are few and far in between, and for everyday use though, this is the tool to shave with.
